If I were the Crying out of Happiness Type…

Dear Friends,

Remember when we all first realized Alicia Silverstone was the girl in Aerosmith’s Cryin’ music video in the early 1990s? Good times.. excellent song. Especially at about the 3:30 mark, when Stephen does classic Stephen. I didn’t know how much I wanted – needed, to be honest! – this microprocessor knee until I tried it. Really, I was Clueless! It’s a Wonder I’ve managed all these Years with the total knee. It’s like I’ve been Robin for 26 years, not realizing I just needed one technological tweak to become Batman. OK, enough with the Alicia Silverstone shout-outs… I hope you appreciated them, I had to google her to find out what else she’d been in besides a string of Aerosmith videos and Clueless. As my BFF will tell you, movies and TV trivia has never been my strong suit. I digress.

Today I had the Plie 3 knee attached to an old socket so I can try it out for a week. My prosthetics guy said I was already walking like I’ve had it for a while by the time I left. There’s resistance in how it bends, which can be adjusted – right now it’s very low, because I’m used to basically gravity swinging things through. But the resistance means I was able to do warrior one and warrior two poses with my LEFT LEG IN FRONT!! I’ve been doing yoga for ten years and have rarely dared try, given that the knee might just bend the rest of the way with no notice, if my foot slipped or a squirrel scampered by or a crow cawed in the wrong key… it has built in stumble recovery. AAAHHH!!

Honestly, if I were the crying out of sheer, unadulterated happiness type, I would have been bawling in the prosthetics clinic. This has potential… it could be a game changer for me. Maybe I could get back into some of the things I used to do (if my lungs give permission)… it’s also submersible in water, so I could go kayaking, for example, and it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I flipped over! Or I could try paddleboarding and not worry about my inevitable fall into the water! I could sell my townhouse, move onto a houseboat, and not worry what would happen to my leg if the boat started taking on water! I mean, there might be other things worthy of concern, but not that.

OK, so let’s see how the next week goes… for now, I’m one happy pirate girl with a robot leg!
